Description [Atlas]-BLAEU, Willem and Johannes-Toonneel des aerdrijcx, ofte Nieuwe atlas, dat is beschryving van alle Landen; Nu nieulycx uytgegeven door Wilhelm: en Iohannem Blaeu [- Tweede, Derde, Vierde deel]. Amsterdam, I. & W. Blaeu [- I. Blaeu], 1642-1646 (Pt. I ticket pasted on 1645), 4 vol., foli o, cont. richly goldtooled overl. vellum (some soiling, some corners sl. dam.), central oval ornament within double gilt ruled border with corner pieces (gold sl. faded), gilt flat spines (gilt faded), gauffered gilt edges (sl. def. Pt. III), t.-p.-26-73-t.-p.-55 ff., t.-p.-57-t.-p.-15-15-8-26 ff., t.-p.-120-10-12 ff., t.-p.-422 pp. (some marg. waterstains, a few minor sm. stains; worldmap dam., some folds). Each vol. kept in a silk dust cover (some waterstains, interior sl. torn). Exc. copy.
Comments Magnificent atlas compl. in 4 vol. with 336 bright cont. col. maps (120, 92, 66, 58). All title pages (6) are goldheightened, a number of maps have some gilt accents. The worldmap in Pt. I needs restoration : the map as such is complete but the fig. of the upper and side borders have been cut out and later partly replaced by other col. engrs. The other maps are in very good condition. The Dutch ed. of Blaeu's "Theatrum Orbis Theatrum" is extremely complex to describe since there are a multitude of variants. Our copy must be a variant to the 1642 ed. which is apparently the 1st Dutch ed. The contents of our copy follows exactly Van der Krogt 2:331I. The appendix (not mentioned in the "vierde deels register des atlas" at the end) is present in the 3rd vol. A number of the maps from the "Aenhangsel" (2:12A) have been inserted without altering their signatures. Our copy follows the description of Van der Krogt 2:221.1 except for the "Voor-reden" of Pt. I which seems to come from the 2-vol. 1635 ed. since it is dated "Uyt onse Druckery den XX april MDCXXXV" and signed by Wilhelm and Iohan Blaeu. At the end of Pt III, the appendix (British Isles) gives an introduction to Pt IV : Atlas of the British Isles. Although the preface of Pt IV was dated 12 November 1647, the t.-p. of all the copies known bear the year 1646. "This is due to the fact that this engraved title page had been used before the French edition of the fourth volume, which appeared in 1646 ..." (Van der Krogt). Ms. ownership entries on t.-p. "P.J. Deckers, Vicep. Herentalii in Begg. 1830" and on front flylvs "A. Dubois, Abbaye de Tongerloo". Ref. Cp. Van der Krogt 2:221.1, 2:221.2, 2:221.3 (Pt 1-3). Van der Krogt 2:321I (Pt 4).
