(Light soiling in the bottom margin, some plates with old repairs). Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label, the sides centred with the Sheremetev arms in gilt, edges dyed red, marbled endpapers (spine ends repaired, small repairs at the extremities). Provenance: illegible contemporary title inscription -- Cf. Mezhdunarodnaia kniga, St. Petersburg 1930, item 14, perhaps this copy. FIRST EDITION, IN A CONTEMPORARY BINDING WITH THE SHEREMETEV ARMS, OF ONE OF THE MOST HANDSOME RUSSIAN BOOKS OF THE 18TH CENTURY, complete with all the plates. 'A great rarity' (Bitovt). This account of Sheremetev's diplomatic tour of 1697-1699 in Poland, Austria, Italy and Malta, was written by his son -- a childhood friend of Emperor Peter II, General en chef, and Arch Chamberlain.
