London: India Museum: 1868-1875. 8 volumes. 4to (335 x 240 mm). With 480 albumen prints mounted (of 481?), all but a handful one to a page. Original decorative cloth gilt and blocked in black. Gutta percha perished, contents loose, volume 6 lacking one "a" plate called for in plate list, one title with ink spots, 4 volumes with later ties, lightly rubbed and one edge gnawed.Provenance: four volumes from Hill Reference Library, Saint Paul, Minnesota (perforated stamps on titles, inkstamps on blank verso of plates).FIRST EDITION of this remarkably comprehensive photographically-illustrated ethnographic study of India. The project was begun on the request of Lord Canning, Governor-General of India, initially as a souvenir of his time on the subcontinent. The officers of the British Army were instructed to go out and photograph "interesting subjects," and the results proved so extensive that a decision was made to publish them in the present format.
