Description Delineating the disposition of Major General Charles Lee"s forces as they advanced against the British under General Henry Clinton early on the day of battle, before the entry of General Washington onto the field. Included are the positions of Lee, the Marquis de Lafayette, "Mad Anthony" Wayne, Oswald, Scott, Maxwell, Grayson, Dickinson, Varnum and Livingston, among others. The British Army"s main columns, situated off the road to Middleton, are depicted along with artillery and cavalry locations. Also noted are Monmouth Court House, Freehold Meeting House, the Great Ravine, Carr"s house, the Wickoff"s houses, roads, woods, brooks and elevations. The Battle of Monmouth marked the Continental Army"s first major encounter with the British after spending the winter at Valley Forge. With France"s official entry into the war early in 1778, the British withdrew from Philadelphia, seeking to consolidate their strength in New York where they anticipated a French attack. In an attempt to thwart Clinton and Cornwallis as they moved troops and artillery through New Jersey, Washington gave his second-in-command, Major General Charles Lee, and the young Marquis de Lafayette the task of halting the British. Lee mounted an advance near Monmouth Court House and then unaccountably reversed his orders before the battle got underway, leading to a chaotic retreat. When Washington arrived, he dismissed Lee and famously rallied the Continental troops, who fought the British to a standstill. The battle was the last major engagement to take place in the northern theater of the war. Pen and ink on laid paper, 19 x 14 ¾ inches. Watermarked "DUBOIS" below a coat-of arms. Inscribed on the reverse "Battle of Monmouth."
